SUICIDE: THE PANDORA’S BOX OF THERAPY In my more than 30 years of professional practice as I visit and consult with other therapists, therapists-in-training, and teachers of therapy, I have found few things to disturb therapists more than suicidal clients. Regardless of the discipline—psychiatry, psychology, clinical social work, counseling, pastoral counseling, or marriage and family therapy, the mention of the word “suicide” changes the basic nature of therapy immediately (Jurich, 2001). Instead of promoting “growth” and foster- ing “change” in our client or clients, we feel the need to immediately refocus therapy to insure the survival of the client. The presenting prob- lem of the client’s quality of life has been superceded by continuance of the client’s existence, regardless of the quality of life. The journey of problem solving has been replaced by an existential crisis
