Pharmland: Through a Looking Glass (of Sheep in Boats and Other Such). And that’s what the name is. We love that title because it is playful and slightly obscure. And it’s our own invention. The reason we worked with a playful title was to avoid the polarizing that inevitably accompanies skepticism about medications. We added the Alice quotation, “of sheep in boats and other such,” because it has to do with the odd juxtapositions and reality distortions, which perplex Alice, implying that what is considered “truth” is changeable and a function of socio–political context. While we are deeply serious in our intentions, the freedom to be playful is important lest the issue become uselessly polarized. There are many ways to consider the relationship between pharmacological psychiatry and systems-oriented psychotherapy. One position is radical and reactive, tending to reject the use of medication without offering creative, viable alternatives. Another position is to combine pharmacology-based psychiatry and family systems work, without consideration of the considerable areas of difficulty and incongruity that arise. Our position is that the two systems are related, but in ways that, to use Alice’s words, are “curioser and curioser” and require much more discussion before their relationship is well understood. We hope this book, whatever you might choose to call it, will make a useful contribution to the conversation. We are, in this book, putting forth the idea that systems-based therapy is an available and alternative approach to human distress that deals with illness and supports health.
