xiii SERIES EDITOR’S FOREWORD It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has. (Hippocrates) Over the past 2 years I have been dealing with several chronic illnesses including heart disease and cancer. These illnesses have changed our fam- ily lifestyle necessitating long hospital stays and at times daily visits to labs for medical testing or appointments with the various specialists provid- ing my care. I would not be writing this Preface if it were not for family, friends, and an understanding employer. I have recently noticed that most (over half) of my present clients are involved with major medical issues as well as diagnosable mental illness and relationship issues. The changing demographics of today’s treatment population require different conceptualizations and interventions. How- ever, few clinicians have had any training in treating the various problems that accompany health issues. Len Sperry has created an important book that clearly shows how to integrate behavioral and medical treatment. Sperry’s training as a medi- cal doctor and as a clinical psychologist/family therapist makes him the ideal resource for designing a model for providing treatment in the new health care landscape. We will no longer be able to treat problems such as depression or anxiety without working closely with other health care personnel who are treating other aspects of the patient’s life and lifestyle. Therapists will need to work closely with all of the various medical person- nel currently treating the client. Therapists will need to go to where health care is being provided, such as primary care and integrative care facilities, tertiary care hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, outpatient surgery centers, and substance abuse treatment centers

xiii پیش‌گفتار سردبیر سری مهم‌تر است که بدانیم چه نوع فردی به بیماری مبتلا است تا اینکه بدانیم یک فرد چه نوع بیماری دارد.
