وظیفه‌ای که دکتر اتو کرنبرگ در کتاب «ماهیت جدایی ناپذیر عشق و پرخاشگری: دیدگاه‌های بالینی و نظری» بر عهده می‌گیرد این است که ابتدا دیدگاه‌های روانکاوانه، روان‌پزشکی بالینی و عصب‌بیولوژیکی را در زمینه‌های مختلف از هم متمایز کند، و سپس با شخصیت شدید شروع کند. اختلالات و تسری به عشق، ویرانگری، عزاداری، معنویت و آینده پژوهش روانکاوانه. دکتر کرنبرگ به دلیل کارش با بیماران مرزی و خودشیفته شهرت دارد و در این کتاب رویکردهای جدیدی را برای تشخیص و درمان شدیدترین اختلالات شخصیت، به ویژه طیف آسیب شناسی روانی خودشیفته شدید ارائه می دهد.
