Starting Lines is a collection of pieces all written with particular purposes
in mind. They are designed, among other things, to entertain and enlighten, to
analyze and persuade, to inform and to interrogate. They are printed here with
one overriding goal-to get you (our students) writing. We hope that they will
encourage you to stretch beyond your comfort zones and try out new forms, new
ideas, and new ways of using language.
The editors would like to thank the many people behind the scenes who
made this edition of Starting Lines possible.
We appreciate the persistence and passion of all the students who worked
through multiple drafts to revise and edit their writing, and then submitted their
work. We applaud their courage.
Warm thanks to Mashey Bernstein for his marvelous introduction, for his
support of the Starting Lines since its inception, and for his generous funding of
the annual Mashey M. Bernstein Future Writer Award.
Thanks also to the many distinguished instructors in the English for
Multilingual Students Program and in the Writing Program who inspire our students
to succeed and encourage them to submit their work. Lucky for us, many of
these same dedicated colleagues also contributed their time and skill by serving
on the Editorial Board to read and rank submissions.
We are especially grateful to Randi Browning, Bob Krut, and Randy Rightmire
for their expertise in selecting the prize-winning pieces for this issue.
We'd also like to thank the Writing Minor Interns Chloe Anderson, Ashley
Brown, Delaney Foerster, Jeffrey Morgan, Summer Mendell, Danielle Riccardo,
Shahara Shabazz, and Dylan Sparks for their time, ideas, diligence, and patience
in editing the manuscript and helping us to prepare it for printing.

and urge you to continue writing, not just for your classes but in all the forms that
enrich your life. In a world of lies, write to ask questions and to speak the truth. In
a world of uncertainty, write to notice what's happening and to figure things out.
In a world that's changing rapidly, write to evoke the past and to invent the future.
Write to dream and to wonder, to challenge yourself and to have fun. Improvise.
Speculate. Take a risk. Grasp all the world has to offer. And write about it!

چکیده فارسی

خطوط شروع مجموعه ای از قطعات است که همه با اهداف خاصی نوشته شده اند
