Where was the line between pleasure and irritation in the sensory overload caused by the sounds, colours, and smells of a medieval market? How could pain and suffering be relieved by hoping for, and desiring to experience, an intimate, almost familiar, contact with Christ? This volume shows the different aspects of sensory experiences that medieval people conveyed through documents, literary accounts, and religious practices. The unifying theme here is how pleasure, pain, desire, and fear appear in differentsometimes conflictingcombinations and settings: from the private space of the monastic cell to the shared hustle of the market. The geographic focus of this volume is Mediterranean Europe, although it also touches on other Western contexts. The combination of different points of view here provides an original contribution to the study of sensory experiences in the Middle Ages.

مرز بین لذت و تحریک در بار حسی ناشی از صداها، رنگ‌ها و بوهای بازار قرون وسطایی کجا بود؟ چگونه می توان درد و رنج را با امید و تمایل به تجربه یک تماس نزدیک و تقریباً آشنا با مسیح تسکین داد؟ این جلد جنبه‌های مختلف تجارب حسی را نشان می‌دهد که مردم قرون وسطی از طریق اسناد، گزارش‌های ادبی و اعمال مذهبی منتقل می‌کردند. موضوع وحدت‌بخش در اینجا این است که چگونه لذت، درد، میل و ترس در ترکیب‌ها و محیط‌های گاه متضاد ظاهر می‌شوند: از فضای خصوصی سلول صومعه تا شلوغی مشترک بازار. تمرکز جغرافیایی این جلد، اروپای مدیترانه‌ای است، اگرچه به سایر زمینه‌های غربی نیز می‌پردازد. ترکیبی از دیدگاه‌های مختلف در اینجا کمکی اصلی به مطالعه تجربیات حسی در قرون وسطی ارائه می‌کند.
