For many years airplane designers have realized that by reducing parasite drag. that drag caused by the shape or form of the aireraft, its performance could be greatly inereased. Early steps in this direction were the changes from biplane to monoplane designs, the elimination of external struts and wires, the incorporation of retractable landing gears, ete. In spite of all these advaneements, the average conventional airplane of today has two to four times the drag that would be necessary if all its functions could be incorporated within its wing alone.

To reduce parasite drag to the absolute minimum, aireraft engineers have sought to design
an airplane without a fuselage or tail in which the pilot, power plant, and load could be
carried entirely within the wing. One of the early attempts along this line resulted in this
1928 model of a twin-boom airplane. In this airplane the pilot, power plant, and payload
were carried within the wing. The small booms reduced drag to such an extent as compared
with a fuselage that an increase in speed, range, and economy was quite evident. This was
an approach to the all-wing ideal.

In 1940 the N1M was developed, This was a true all-wing design which served as an experi-
mental model to survey the flying characteristies and performance of such aireraft. Hundreds
of flights were made with this airplane using every conceivable flight configuration. There
