In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of our approach to microethno- graphic discourse analysis of languaging and literacy events in educational settings. As noted in the Preface, we call our approach a microethnographic discourse analysis approach (building on Erickson’s, 2004, discussion of micro- ethnography). In brief, we focus on how people act and react to each other primarily through their languaging and related semiotic systems. As a corollary, we recognize that part of how people act and react to each other involves not just the immediate, local social event they embody but also previous events, histories, and broader social and cultural contexts and ideologies. Both in our personal lives and in our work with educators and young people, we are painfully aware of oppression, violence, and marginalization associated with racism, colonial- ism, patriarchy, heteronormativity, sexism, and other forms of whiteness (e.g., Frankenberg, 2001; Leonardo, 2009; Lipsitz, 2006; Morrison, 1992; Roediger, 1999; Schucman, 2014). And simultaneously, we are also painfully aware of the tendency to reduce the lives of those who have suffered such oppressions and violence to a single dimension of victimization/resistance, backgrounding (if acknowledging at all) the joy, mutuality, caring, wonder, love, dignity, explo- ration, affection, and “world-building” of their lives (cf., Hine & Thompson, 1999; hooks, 2015; Royster, 2000). We begin the chapter with an illustrative case from a long-term microeth- nographic study in a seventh-grade classroom.
